About Jay and Gloria (if you happen to be a Modern Family fan)

Next month, Modern Family Season 5 will premiere. If you haven't heard of it or watched it before, I'd recommend it to you. It's an American sitcom series broadcast on ABC.

It tells a story of Jay Pritchett, the patriarch, and his big happy family around him. Every day a lot of things happen to this family. They could be happy, sad, inspiring, silly, frustrating, crazy, exciting, ridiculous, hilarious, misunderstanding... All of these make me think about my own life. But what impresses me most is how well Jay and Gloria (Jay's second wife, who is young enough to be his daughter) get on with each other in their life despite the age difference between them.

Gloria is a gorgeous Colombian-born woman, and in many people's eyes she is way too young and too hot for Jay. People think Gloria married Jay for his money (which is not true), but she doesn't care about what other people think. "I'm attracted to him because he's sexy." says Gloria.

This age-gap, multi-cultural marriage is what both Jay and Gloria really enjoy. No matter how serious a problem you think it is, when it faces true love, it seems so little tiny and so insignificant. We sometimes might laugh at those jokes and hilarious moments caused by Gloria's unfamiliarity with American culture, but in the mean time, it makes us think. Jay and Gloria are definitely from two different worlds. One grew up in a metropolitan city in America, the other was born and raised in a small rural village in Colombia. One knows everything about Colombia, the other literally knows nothing. One doesn't speak Spanish, the other doesn't know how to say "helicopter" in English. And yet, they're so great together. They make up for each other. Jay's stepson, Manny, whose birth father is Gloria's ex-husband, didn't like Jay at the the beginning, but a special bond developed along the way, and that eventually became a typical father-son relationship.

What does it take for us to find the one we've been long looking for? What's the most important thing in a relationship/marriage? Being rich, young, pretty, handsome?

No. What we need is a true heart, and another true heart willing to walk in and accept. So if one day you come across that person, cling to him/her and do not let him/her slip away. Don't mind what other people think; we live in a world where some people can't seem to survive if they stop being judgmental.

May you find that one sooner.

Jay, Gloria and their son Manny, a happy family
